People are generally very happy with this little chopper and I think that helps to speak for the overall reliability of the Syma lineup in general. We all know that some of these mini RC units can vary greatly in terms of quality control and you never know if you’re going to get a good one or a lemon. Many people are incredibly impressed with the 3 axis proportional control and I would have to agree that you shouldn’t buy an RC unit without proportional control. In case you’re wondering proportional control means that when you make a small motion on the remote, you get a small movement in the chopper as a result. Vice versa, make a large motion on the control and get a very large result! This is very important when purchasing any remote control toy.

You should be aware that this is an indoor chopper and will not perform well outside. Even the slightest breeze can throw these things off kilter. It’s only 10 grams for pete’s sake! If you want to get an outdoor chopper I’d recommend checking out my DH 9053 Review and see if it suits your needs.

Most people seem to agree that it takes a little while to get used to flying this chopper however I think that for many of them this was their first mini RC. Operation is standard however due to the proportional control it may be somewhat more sensitive than what you are used to and this may be causing the initial learning curve.

A few people have mentioned that the landing gears have a tendency to break off after hard (read: crash) landings. This is true of any mini RC chopper and of course it’s always a good idea to try not to crash! However, these things are avoidable and with a TINY bit of crazy glue the problem can be remedied easier. One person mentioned that you can easily salvage parts off of other scrapped RC choppers as well.

In general people are very impressed with the overall design, reliability, charge time and features of the SYMA S013 UH-60 Black Hawk and I think based on the reviews I’ve read and what I’ve heard others say about this helicopter it would be a wise and (very) cheap way to get started in the world of mini RC Helicopters.

First thing you should realize when you’re buying any mini RC helicopter is that these things are intended as toys. They aren’t for serious hobbyists and therefore you can’t expect the same level of build quality and functionality that you can in a $300+ 6 Channel model!

Common sense stuff I know! But so many times you read reviews on amazon or on forums where the people are crapping all over these little choppers because they won’t do things that they were never designed to do. These little guys are designed for indoor use, 10min flying time tops and as long as you don’t expect too much, they’re fun as hell!

There are ton of mini RC helicopters out there today and most of them are pure crap! But there are a few coming out now that actually live up to the promise of controllable flight and I own a few that work pretty well. So lets take a look at which ones to use, and which ones to stay away from.

The Falcon V – STAY AWAY

Well it’s not THAT bad. I bought two last year in February and out of those 2, one of them worked pretty good. I returned the broken one to the store for another one which worked ok for about 2 weeks and then it just stopped charging, the lady at the store told me that they have had major troubles with these choppers. I kept meaning to take it back but never got around to it…

Actually when they work, these choppers are pretty fun to fly, they are 3 channel and have the built in gyroscope but I think the quality control issues with the Falcon products just make them not worth the money. This Christmas they were also advertising a larger model (Probably 14″?), and it looked pretty cool but after the experiences with the smaller Falcon V, I’d say stay away!

Helizone Firebird – Go For It!

Ok, mine is still in the mail, but I used my friends the other day for a couple of hours and I think it’s going to be the top pick for my site for now. It works awesome, charge time vs fly time was great and it looks really cool.

You can find these on amazon for some pretty good prices and they seem to be readily available now. There was awhile back this spring that no one could find them. I’d highly recommend this as one of the best 3ch mini RC Helicopters out there.

Syma S107 – The “other” Best Indoor RC Heli

Now there is a lot of talk that the Syma and the Firebird are basically the same chopper and I think in a lot of ways they essentially are. However in every test we’ve done the Firebird comes out consistently faster than the Syma so there is definitely something working a little better, which is why I’m going for the Firebird this time around!

I’ve had a couple of Symas and they work great, easy to control, easy to fly and easy to fix! Replacement parts are so readily available that you’ll have no trouble keeping your Syma flying for a long time to come.

UPDATED DH9053 Review for  MAY 2011 – Remotecontrolhelicopters.net NO LONGER recommends the DH9053.

When I first got this chopper I was really quite impressed overall but it just hasn’t lived up to the expectations considering the price I paid for it.

Basically after having it for a few months the chopper is completely un-flyable. I don’t know if it’s a problem with the remote or the chopper itself but it will not calibrate and sometimes just loses contact with the remote totally. It’s held up well enough physically but the flying experience just sucks with this chopper and I’m very disappointed as this was one of my first “out-door” units.

I mentioned in my first review that I was a little concerned about the remote with the DH9053 but I was more concerned with the frequency than the actual remote itself.

If you’re looking for an entry level outdoor chopper like the DH9053 then I would recommend checking out the Blade 120 SR – It’s received TOP NOTCH reviews from everyone who has purchased it and in generally looks to be a much better Helicopter for someone looking for a good intermediate out-door chopper.

So I just got my hands on the new DH 9053 3.5 channel remote control helicopter. It’s a nice chopper that offers some cool new features including the 3.5 channel remote but it definitely has it’s drawbacks as well.

We all know that the three channel choppers give you the most basic flight options that are: up/down, backward/forward, and left/right.

But one thing that we’ve never been able to control on these indoor electric choppers is the speed…

This is where the DH 9053 changes things up compared to other choppers that I’ve used. With the 3.5 channel unit you can select between high and low speeds using the remote and let me tell you it adds a whole new level of control when it comes to doing things like precision landings and close proximity flying. It’s really cool!

Personally I think this is a great step in the right direction but I do believe that it is only a step. The speed can’t be controlled gradually and is only selectable by switch (high/low). So while this does offer a great deal of control for fine-tuned flying it is still lacking when you think about what would be possible with a full gradient speed control.

So lets keep in mind that this is not a “small indoor chopper”. This thing is 26 inches long and should be flown in an open area, especially while you get used to it. If you’ve never owned a RC Helicopter before I wouldn’t recommend this as a starting unit! Buy a Syma S107 or other small indoor Syma and just get used to flying first!

As I was researching this chopper before purchasing I read quite a few reviews. Especially user reviews on sites like Amazon and other hobby websites. There are certainly some people who have had their fair share of problems with this chopper but I suspect a lot of that is because they are new to the RC chopper world and have unrealistic expectations.

There are however a lot of great reviews on this chopper and these seemed to come from people who had more experience with RC Helicopters so I thought it was safe to spend my money and buy this chopper.

Am I happy with the DH 9053?

Yes and No

Ok, lets talk about the things that I like:

It looks beautiful. It’s certainly one of the nicer looking choppers I’ve owned and for the price (under $100) the workmanship is quite nice at first glance. At 26″ it dwarfs my indoor chopper collection and it’s definitely the most impressive and eye catching piece when people check out the choppers I have.

Now in my opinion it flies quite well. I don’t think it is the best flying chopper I’ve ever used but it’s certainly not that hard to get the hang of it and after you spend some time executing some basic exercises like hovering and flying in small circles I think you’ll be quite happy.

This is where a lot of the bad reviews I read really bashed the chopper. But basically they read like “I took it out of the box, charged it up, and I can’t fly the thing!” Well if you’re used to playing with the indoor mini’s then yea… You’re going to have that problem!

While this isn’t a serious hobbyist chopper it’s getting pretty dang close and because it’s so much bigger, stability is going to be an issue. You really need to spend the time learning the control sensitivities and develop your touch, otherwise you’re gonna crash hard!

And lets keep in mind: “The Bigger They Are, The Harder They Fall”

This chopper won’t take abuse like you’re average indoor mini RC. One serious crash and you’ll be out of commission! Take your time, learn the controls and learn how to fly it and it will be very rewarding, skip this step and you’ll have a busted chopper. Simple as that!

What don’t I like about this chopper?

The controller!

Now this is not a deal breaker, but the controller is only 27MHz as opposed to what “should” be standard 2.4 GHz. This means that there is the possibility for slight interruptions in control to the chopper, especially if there are other devices present.

I haven’t personally had any issues YET, but I’ve read that some people are starting to have issues with this and it was a concern of mine from the outset.

Don’t let this dissuade you from buying the chopper however. It works fine for me and even if you do have issues they will be small and intermittent and because the price of this chopper is so reasonable it’s a very good way to get into a larger helicopter for a good price and give you some practice before you go out and invest BIG bucks in a real hobbyist outdoor chopper!

Number 2 – The Syma S022 Big Army Chinook

Yep, another Syma. For now these guys will remain in my top 5 until something better comes along!

This chopper is just too much fun to play with and it looks awesome with the dual rotors and larger size. It’s a bit bulkier than the smaller Syma’s and definitely doesn’t have the handling of the S107 but that would be true in real life as well!

It’s a perfect companion to go along with the other two Syma military style choppers and for under $100 you can have all three! The obvious benefit to this besides owning 3 really cool RC Helicopters is that you can be flying on constantly while the other 2 are charging. This means no more waiting around for the choppers to charge!

Number 3 – The Syma 3 Channel S013 Black Hawk

Ok… Starting to notice a trend yet? Yes, I do recommend the Syma’s a lot but thats only because they seem to have the best reputation around and I like them personally.

If you find a chopper that consistently shows good build quality and doesn’t always arrive with problems with the batteries etc… then I say stick with it! I’ve been burned by too many different choppers arriving non-functional out of the box.

This is a new offering from Syma and it has the Black Hawk down to a tee (as much as possible, purists could argue that the tail rotor isn’t top mounted on a real black hawk!).

The best thing about this chopper is the 3 channel remote design and of course the built in gyro. Aside from the price there isn’t a huge difference between this and the Apache featured above, and you could probably make your decision based on style as opposed to actual features.

Number 4 – The Exceed Madhawk 300

I love this chopper and everything about it! For the price it’s one of the most reliable outdoor/indoor choppers available and the build quality is surprisingly well done!

This is probably the best step if you’re looking to move between one of the cheaper indoor electric choppers and a more expensive outdoor model because it still gives you the functionality of an indoor chopper and can withstand the inevitable crashes while you learn to fly it!

The controls are certainly a little more sluggish than the other smaller indoor choppers but you’ll get used to this very quickly and it is a lot of fun to fly!

Number 5 -The Syma S012 Apache AH-64

Another strictly indoor chopper but for the price you just can’t beat it! Under $20 right now at various online retailers and in-stock is a very rare occurrence in choppers at this price range and this one (for the time being) is ready to go!

Double rotors with a built in gyroscope is the main reason that I’m recommending this one. I wouldn’t recommend anything these days without a built in gyro because they just don’t work that well for indoor flying (in my opinion anyways). Some folks will claim that the gyro doesn’t matter or that you just need to improve your skills, which is probably true!

But for me, I just like to have fun flying these things around the house and this chopper will do that. Also, the military styling’s just look cool! And you know that matters!
